Certificate in Jewish Day School Education

Photo by Ben HarmonThroughout the past decade there has been significant growth in Jewish day school enrollments in the United States. Not only are more students attending existing Jewish day schools but also more day schools have been created. In particular, there has been a proliferation of community day high schools. As a result, Jewish high schools, middle schools and elementary day schools are now facing a serious shortage of qualified personnel. In addition, day schools are increasingly challenged to move beyond dual curriculum models to new integrative curriculum designs for which there is a need for skilled leadership, research and evaluation.

The 21-credit CERTIFICATE IN JEWISH DAY SCHOOL EDUCATION enables educators to more effectively meet the unique challenges of the day school setting-helping students to explore connections between Jewish and secular learning, and to integrate Jewish and American values. Participants strengthen both their knowledge of Judaism and pedagogy to better educate students, helping them to find their place in the Jewish community and society at large, and inspiring them to acquire a sense of responsibility for preserving Jewish tradition and for bettering society. The certificate focuses on these four areas of study: Educational Context of Day School Education, Content and Language, Pedagogical Content and Knowledge, and Teaching Practices and Learning Styles.
