An anonymous New York donor has made three full-tuition fellowships available for Hebrew College students completing a Master of Jewish Education with a focus on Jewish special education. The gift marks another significant step toward establishing Jewish special education as a major field of study at Hebrew College.
Initiated in 2000 with a certificate and a master’s track, HC ’s Jewish Special Education Program received a $1.5 million gift from Philadelphia philanthropist Bernard J. Korman this fall to endow a new professorship in Jewish special education and to support research and curriculum development in
the field.
Students in the Cantor-Educator program and the Rabbinical School involved with significant work in the field of Jewish special education will also be eligible for the new fellowships, which will be awarded for the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 academic years.
"These fellowships lie at the heart of the growing field of Jewish special education, because they really make it possible for someone to do this important work," says Dr. Scott M. Sokol, Director of the Jewish Special Education Program.
Sokol hopes that the new fellowships will also help to raise consciousness in the Boston Jewish community about Jewish special education as a viable career choice.
